In the past decade refugee populations have more than doubled. There are more than 25 million refugees and over 41 million internally displaced as of 2020.
In 2012, photojournalist Shannon Jensen documented the displacement of South Sudanese from their homes through photos of their footwear, or lack of it. Later, the photos became an exhibit called A Long Walk, as part of the annual Moving Walls exhibit of the Open Society Foundations. Two of the paintings above were inspired by Shannon Jensen's photos. Some coverage of the exhibit can seen on PRI here.
